The Journal of Leroy E. Grey 011

#3cccJournal2TwittBook I wrote lots about our commune experiences as they happened in the
summer/fall of 1970 but all my belongings and 0539
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..Kris’s stuff were burned. Geoffrey Fox, one of the Gestalt Therapy group that
responded to my advertisement to 0540
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..create the Pat Lake Commune, kept the journal from the fire. Geoff has said
I could have the journal back.  0541
#3cccJournal2TwittBook But so far, each time we’ve connected the journal was with someone else
(usually the woman psychologist who led 0542
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..their Gestalt group-house in Vancouver). I’m hopeful he’ll eventually return
it. The cops were unsuccessful in 0543
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..kicking us out the first time they tried, which was in response to complaints
from the locals. I surprised 0544
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..them with a legal, bona fide mining permit and the requisite size hole. Then
they came back when about half of 0545
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..us were away at a Vancouver fall festival. We were away in Vancouver for a
few weeks. Yes, the RCMP and 0546
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..immigration officials came back a second time and this time were
successful in breaking us up. They knew most 0547
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..of us were from the states and without visas those remaining at the
commune were forced to leave Canada. 0548
#3cccJournal2TwittBook  Kristine Stone left the guy she was with (Ted), after I confronted her with
questions as to why she was with 0549
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..him. They obviously didn’t share much in common and he didn’t seem to
want to be a father to her daughter Amy. 0550
#3cccJournal2TwittBook I have a way of being childlike that appeals to kids, so Amy and I got along
great. After my conversation with 0551
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..Kristine she moved in with me. We were a family for the next two years, till
she left me for someone else. I 0552
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..should have realized that someone that moved in and then left at least three
other guys I knew about, would 0553
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..probably do the same to me. Kris left just before I met Robert and Elizabeth
Ziegler, and we began working on 0554
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..those Back to the Land interviews I’ve already written about. I should
mention how Pat Lake Commune came to be 0555
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..since it’s a pretty amazing story. However, you’ll first need to know why I
moved to Canada and the people I 0556
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..met there. Those people and events all had a part to play in making Pat
Commune happen. In the spring of 1969 0557
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..I was busted for possession of marijuana and hashish. Being the first time, I
got two years probation. Then in 0558
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..October of the same year, my brother-in-law ratted on me to the cops and
setup a buy with a narc. At first I 0559
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..was really pissed but when I discovered he did this to keep my sister from
going to jail (she was pregnant) I 0560
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..understood. My lawyer told me that due to my previous probations, I was
looking at a minimum of 10 years in 0561
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..jail. So I decided right then and there I would rather be a fugitive and began
making my plans. I had a 24/7 0562
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..tail on me, because I had been selling large quantities of LSD to middle men
who then sold it to the street 0563
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..buyers. My friend in California and I were partners and he knew the guy who
manufactured it in a 40 foot 0564
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..trailer/lab that was continuously mobile. I arranged for my brother-in-law
to pick me up at a predetermined 0565
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..spot. After about 3 buses and a number of transfers in the dark I managed
to shake my tail. We began speeding 0566
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..to the air-port at over 90 miles an hour. I told Noel to back off and go the
speed limit. It would have been 0567
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..stupid to end up back to jail just because of a traffic ticket! I had to run to
catch my plane, a non-stop 0568
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..flight to San Francisco. But when the plane was over Colorado it was
suddenly forced to land. Before we could 0569
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..exit the plane, I watched in horror as a long line of taxis circled the plane,
followed by an outer circle of 0570
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..FBI cars. I was sweating bullets now! Did someone tip the cops? Did they
think I was that important? It didn’t 0571
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..make sense, but there they were and I had to do some fast thinking.  They
began to interview every passenger. 0572
#3cccJournal2TwittBook Since the facility was cordoned off they weren’t worried about people using
the bathroom, so I asked to use the 0573
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..toilet. When I got into the bathroom I ripped up all my ID, flushed it down
the toilet and created a new 0574
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..identity in my head. Fortunately, before they were able to interview me
everyone was sent back to the plane 0575
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..and our flight resumed. The problem? Someone had called in a bomb threat
on our plane! In San Francisco I 0576
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..looked up some old friends. I went to Marsha Stewart’s house, but she was
away in Hawaii. Her female roommates 0577
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..welcomed me, telling me I could stay as long as needed. I liked Marsha a lot
and we were together for awhile 0578
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..in California, at the Camp Meeker church Ace and I rented. One night, just
as we were climaxing together, an 0579
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..earthquake struck. Maybe that’s one of the reasons she made such a lasting
impression, because we weren’t 0580
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..together for very long. She did fly out to visit me in Baltimore, sometime
after that, while I was doing one 0581
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..of my drug runs. But she got real uppity about my friends, telling me I could
do better than that. Looking 0582
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..back I can admit she was right and I should have listened.  But at the time I
told her if she didn’t like my 0583
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..friends, she should leave. She left sometime before I was busted. I think she
intuitively knew I was headed 0584
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..for trouble. I didn’t know it at the time but she had already gotten pregnant
by me. My first year in Canada, 0585
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..before Pat Lake Commune, she came to visit, telling me she had been
pregnant but the baby was aborted 0586
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..accidentally. She made a fruit smoothy in a blender that someone in the
house has used to crush up LSD tabs. 0587
#3cccJournal2TwittBook But once again she criticized my friends and left. Months later I got a letter of
apology. She had lied to me 0588
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..about the LSD blender story. What had actually happened was she got an
abortion and now she was truly sorry. I 0589
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..was shocked and hurt by her decisions. The other person I looked up was
my wife, Bridgette. She and I had 0590
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..broken up a year or so ago and she was living with this guy Steve Stripp. I
asked them if they could drive me 0591
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..up to the Canadian border, as it was just too dangerous for me to hitchhike
as a fugitive. Bridgette talked 0592
#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..Steve into doing it and I was sure thankful. 0593
