#3cccJournal2TwittBook SPRING 1973: By April, Scott and I both agreed we could trust Adrianne, especially since she’s been persistent 0289

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..and proved her trustworthiness in other ways. But I still made her promise to take down the A-frame and haul 0290

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..it away by June 1st. She moved in the day we left and we all hugged and said our fond farewells. I think I 0291

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..could have gotten it on with Adrianne if I wanted to.  She’s a nice enough girl and pretty but the timing was 0292

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..just never right. In Bear River I looked up Bryan and some of the other people I met while doing those 0293

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..interviews of the back-to-the-land people. Originally those interviews were going to be sold to CBC Radio as 0294

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..a series. Since CBC bought two previous freelance pieces of mine, I figured there was a good chance they’d go 0295

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..for it. But I need access to some tape editing equipment and that just hasn’t happened yet. Since I became 0296

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..friends with some of the people I interviewed I figured someone would be willing to put us up. But there have 0297

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..been many changes. When I went to see Jim Hulbert he was in the process of cutting up his paintings. Canvas 0298

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..after canvas lay in shreds. Seems he got into an argument with Gail and she left with Ian. I don’t blame her 0299

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..if she was seeing this kind of craziness. When I finally got him to calm down and talk he began talking about 0300

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..joining this 14 year old guru’s spiritual movement! I could hardly believe my ears. Jim knew as well as I that 0301

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..this so-called guru regularly broke his own rules, convincing his followers it was OK because it was a form 0302

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..of Lila, “divine play”. Fortunately, we found out about this guy who owned a newly built log cabin on a 0303

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..few acres, about two miles outside of town, up a long winding one lane dirt road on the “mountain”. By British 0304

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..Columbia standards they were small hills but around here they call them mountains. The cabin is REALLY small. 0305

#3cccJournal2TwittBook Just one room and a loft for sleeping. We rented it for $25 a month. Scott took the loft and I bunk downstairs. 0306

#3cccJournal2TwittBook Since I’ve had gardening experience but Scott hasn’t, I immediately took it upon myself to raise as much of our 0307

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..food as possible. Contributing the food is especially important since I don’t have a Canadian Social Insurance 0308

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..card and can only work under the table (usually farm jobs or places like Shum Organic Foods where I worked 0309

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..when I first moved to Vancouver). They ask no questions and I don’t have to lie. I hate lying, it just goes 0310

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..against how I was raised. Scott doesn’t mind sharing his unemployment insurance but I wouldn’t feel right if I 0311

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..didn’t contribute in some way to our living expenses. Hoping some other work comes through by July, when 0312

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..Scott’s checks run out. On APRIL 22, easter Sunday, I took a walk down into Bear River. It was a gorgeous day. 0313

#3cccJournal2TwittBook How I LOVE Bear River. The narrow one lane paved roads, usually only wide enough for one car, stream up and down 0314

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..the steep hillsides in pairs or threes, one road above the other, dotted with large, old Victorian homes along 0315

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..each road. In the winter you can see the hillsides with all their houses scattered about. I was walking along 0316

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..one of the steepest parts of the town. One road was above me, almost straight up, and another below. Bear 0317

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..River itself, which is maybe 150 ft wide in spots was far enough below that I was above the seagulls that ride 0318

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..the breezes up and down the river. Suddenly I hear this voice beckoning me from above. I look up and see 0319

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..Watson Peck, one of the farmers I interviewed last year. He’s a pretty amazing guy, in his 60’s but full of 0320

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..energy and loving life to its fullest. I know its because of all the vitamins and healthy organic foods 0321

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..he eats. He was leaning over a protective railing along the road above waving me to come up. When I finally 0322

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..arrived he invited me into their church bible study, which was about to begin.  I was going to say no when he 0323

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..told me the lesson was on Acts chapter 2, about how all the early Christians lived together in community. So I 0324

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..decided to stay. That was the beginning of an amazing journey. I’m now attending Bible study and youth classes 0325

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..at Watson Peck’s church, an Advent Christian church (not Seventh Day Adventist) pastored by Earl Waterman. And 0326

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..I’m also going to bible study and youth classes at the Bear River Baptist Church, which is being taught by 0327

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..Pastor Switzer. I enjoyed hearing Pastor Switzer’s testimony because he’s a reformed alcoholic and understands 0328

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..suffering. His son and I get along well and he often stops by to visit. But I’m afraid he’s heading for some 0329

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..hard  times. I know he’s already experimented with drugs and feels rebellious. Maybe preacher’s kids are 0330

#3cccJournal2TwittBook ..usually rebellious, just because of all the extra scrutiny they have to endure. 0331
